How do I know if my heater core is bad?

Common signs of a bad heater core include: no heat or weak heat from the vents even when the engine is warm, a sweet antifreeze smell inside the car, foggy windows that won't clear (especially on the inside), wet carpet on the passenger side floor, a greasy film on the inside of the windshield, rapidly dropping coolant levels with no visible external leak, and in severe cases, steam coming from the vents. If you notice any of these symptoms, have your cooling system checked promptly to prevent engine damage.

How much does it cost to replace a heater core?

Heater core replacement typically costs $500-$1,500 for most vehicles, with some luxury vehicles costing $2,000+. The part itself is relatively inexpensive ($30-$200), but labor is extremely high because the dashboard must often be removed to access the heater core. Labor rates of $75-$150/hour combined with 4-10 hours of work account for most of the cost. Some vehicles like Ford Taurus, Dodge Ram, and certain GM trucks are known for particularly difficult heater core access.

Can I drive with a bad heater core?

You can temporarily drive with a bad heater core, but it's not recommended. A leaking heater core will continuously lose coolant, potentially causing engine overheating and serious damage. The coolant fumes inside the cabin can cause headaches and nausea. As a temporary fix, you can bypass the heater core by connecting the two heater hoses together, but you'll have no cabin heat or defrost capability. This is only safe in warm weather and should be a short-term solution.

Why is heater core replacement so expensive?

The heater core itself is inexpensive ($30-$200), but it's located deep inside the dashboard, making access extremely difficult. Most vehicles require removing the entire dashboard, steering column, and HVAC housing to reach the heater core. This process takes 4-10 hours of skilled labor. At $75-$150 per hour, labor costs quickly add up. Some vehicles are notorious for difficult heater core jobs - Ford Taurus, Dodge Ram trucks, and many GM vehicles can take 8+ hours. This is why it's critical to use a quality replacement part to avoid doing the job twice.

Can I replace a heater core myself?

DIY heater core replacement is possible but challenging. It requires removing the dashboard, disconnecting multiple electrical connectors, HVAC components, and possibly the steering column. You'll need basic hand tools, a service manual or repair guide specific to your vehicle, and 8-16 hours of time. The job isn't technically difficult but requires patience and organization to track all the fasteners and connectors. If you're comfortable with interior disassembly and have done similar work, you can save $400-$1,000 in labor costs.

How long does a heater core last?

A heater core typically lasts 10-20 years or 150,000-200,000+ miles with proper maintenance. Factors that shorten heater core life include: using incorrect coolant or mixing coolant types, neglecting coolant flushes (should be done every 30,000-60,000 miles), electrolysis from dissimilar metals in the cooling system, and contaminated coolant. Vehicles that use Dex-Cool or have aluminum heater cores may be more prone to failure. Regular cooling system maintenance is the best prevention.

What causes heater core failure?

Heater core failure is typically caused by: internal corrosion from old or contaminated coolant, electrolysis (electrical current flowing through the cooling system), clogging from sediment or stop-leak products, external damage from road debris or accidents, physical deterioration of seals and tanks over time, and thermal stress from repeated heating and cooling cycles. Using the correct coolant type and maintaining the cooling system with regular flushes significantly extends heater core life.

Can a heater core be repaired or must it be replaced?

In most cases, a leaking heater core must be replaced. While some specialty radiator shops can repair heater cores by re-soldering or re-coring, this is rarely cost-effective due to the high labor cost to remove and reinstall it. A repaired core may also fail again sooner than a replacement. Given that quality used or aftermarket heater cores cost $30-$200, replacement is almost always the better choice. Save the repair option only for rare or unavailable cores on vintage vehicles.

About the 2016 Aston-Martin Db9-Gt Heater Core

The heater core is a small radiator located inside your dashboard that provides heat to the cabin. Hot engine coolant flows through the heater core, and a blower fan pushes air across it to warm the interior. When the heater core fails, you may experience no heat, a sweet coolant smell inside the vehicle, fogged windows, or coolant leaks on the passenger floor.

Signs of Failure

No heat from vents
Sweet coolant smell inside vehicle
Foggy windows that won't clear
Coolant leak on passenger floor
Low coolant level with no visible external leaks
Overheating engine
Wet carpet on passenger side
Greasy film on inside of windshield

Replacement Info

Heater core replacement is notoriously labor-intensive because the part is buried deep inside the dashboard. In many vehicles, the entire dashboard must be removed to access the heater core, which can take 4-8 hours of labor. Some vehicles have more accessible designs. Due to the high labor cost, many shops charge $500-$1,500+ for the complete job, making a quality used heater core a smart choice to save on parts cost.

OEM vs Aftermarket — 2016 Aston-Martin Db9-Gt Heater Core

Recommendation: OEM Preferred

Heater cores are relatively inexpensive parts, so the cost difference between OEM and aftermarket is minimal. OEM cores are designed to exact specifications with proper flow rates and heat transfer characteristics. Aftermarket cores may have lower quality materials that corrode faster or don't provide adequate heat output. Given the extreme labor cost to replace this part, investing in a quality OEM unit makes sense to avoid repeat repairs.

OEM Advantages

Exact fit guaranteed
Proper coolant flow rates
Designed for vehicle's heating capacity
Better corrosion resistance
OE quality materials and construction

Aftermarket Advantages

Lower initial cost
Widely available
May include updated designs
